Onboarding & Long Press Video Recording Option on Physics Toolbox AR for Android
Check out the most updated version of the AR Mode of Physics Toolbox Sensor Suite and the stand-alone app on Android. New onboarding slides explain how to get the best results for visualizing magnetic fields, including the following:
- Use portrait mode
- Invert the phone vertically
- Tapping
Additionally, now you can record video by doing a "long press" on the white circular button near the bottom of the screen.
Are you interested in modeling fields at a smaller scale? Using a small ball, such as a child's "ball pit ball," place button magnets inside (as in the first image below) or outside (as in the second image) to represent magnetic poles. The Earth can be modeled as a simple dipole, while other planets, such as Mars, have complex, multipole fields! Thanks to our collaborator, Ramon Lopez, for this idea.

How many ways are there to measure the height of a building using a smartphone? According to this new, free guide, available in PDF, there are 61 ways!
This website includes video tutorials as well as information about the 61 challenges that are organized by difficulty, themes (mechanics, optics, wave physics, mathematics, "bizarre methods," and even "methods that do not work"!)
All materials are available in English and French.
Use the smartphone light sensor to measure angular velocity, linear velocity, and centripetal acceleration of a train moving in a circle.
"What and how to teach about motion" is a Spanish-language article that discusses multimodal approaches to teaching, including the use of smartphones.
Find the distance traveled, walking speed, and gait frequency with this simple lab experience.
Physics Toolbox around the Web
Motion tracking of limb movement is being studied in the Czech Republic with the goal to support physical rehabilitation and monitor neurological disorders.
Thanks to Ann-Marie Pendrill, Stefan, and Andreas for putting together this brief video showing AR magnetic fields around roller coaster breaking systems at Edutainment Day at Grona Lund!
Physics Toolbox at National Conferences
Physics Toolbox will showcase its work at DroidConSF from November 25-26 to speak with the Android developer community to discuss the challenges of working with ARCore. Connect with us!
On October 3, Chrystian represented the Cyberlearning team and Physics Toolbox AR at the annual National Science Foundation meeting of principal investigators. Thanks to @dmboyer for capturing this candid photo of researchers at work!
