Concrete Example Lab Experiences with AR
a lesson developed by the NASA Space Science Education Consortium
On January 23, Don Balanzat presented about the affordances of using AR in education, including a detailed analysis of how Physics Toolbox AR might help learners to conceptualize a wide variety of field patterns.
Additionally, on January 20, the Temple University / AAPT NASA Space Science Education Consortium team tried out a related "Modeling Planetarium Magnetism" lesson at the AAPT Winter Meeting 2020 in Orlando, FL.
Click on the teacher guide and student worksheet below (make a copy from Google Docs versions), or see the Digi Kit below from the AAPT to get the lesson and a series of vetted resources to contextualize the activity further.

Use your smartphone light meter to measure the absorptivity of different colors of LED light through liquids. While we have previously shared this article, it has now been fully published and updated.
While not a specific lesson idea, this Spanish-language blog entry encourages readers to consider carefully how they use modern devices (MDs) in introductory physics, particularly by referencing a new article from Planinsic and Etkina. In short, the article and blog emphasize three ways to using MDs:
- Using a MD as a black box.
- Learning how the MD works.
- Learning new physics using the knowledge of how the MD works.
Physics Toolbox around the Web
Read about how Gary Wolf explores his essential tremor by tracking it with Physics Toolbox Accelerometer. Perhaps more importantly, he explores the importance of "everyday science" in monitoring medical conditions, which helps patients to become self-empowered while protecting their privacy.
What is the role of the Internet of things in education? Review this French-language article, "Objets connectés: nouveaux dispositifs pour la médiation des savoirs scientifiques?" to consider how our educational pedagogies might be adapted to include new technology.
A new initiative in Portugal looks to regulate the weight of children's backpacks resulting from heavy textbooks. Physics Toolbox was used to analyze how backpacks of different weights affect motion as students walk.
This Dutch-language thesis uses Physics Toolbox to analyze passive WiFi-tracking.
Physics Toolbox at AAPTWM20
Vieyra Software presented a poster on common struggles with magnetic field conceptualization by presenting a poster at the AAPT Winter Meeting in Orlando, FL: "Visualizing the Invisible: Viewing 3-D Magnetic Fields with Your Smartphone"
