Sensors for the Improved Cultivation of Celery, Blackberries, and Peppers
Leaf color charts have long been used to determine how nitrogen-rich (and healthy) a plant is. Thesis projects from the Technical University of Ambato in central Ecuador have used the color detector within Physics Toolbox in separate studies to measure the health and nutritional quality of celery, blackberry, and pepper plants.
Carolina Dayana Tomala Barragán explored the effect of hormone applications, an improvement over chemical fertilizers and heavy pesticides.
José Welington Sánchez Real evaluated the effect of various products to prevent powdery mildew disease in blackberry plants.
María Ibelia Barreno Morales applied macroalgae to peppers to determine the impact on common fungal infections that affect these crops.
In the Classroom
Traditional vs. Digital Methods in Teaching Newton's 2nd Law
This study in Morocco found that use of smartphones in a modified Atwood machine lab activity resulted in greater gains across multiple dimensions when compared to students completing a traditional lab activity.
Measuring Fluid Oscillations
This Portuguese-language article explores the use of smartphone magnetometer and video analysis to quantify the oscillatory motion of water through a U-shaped tube.
A Fun Polarization Toy
The author of this article presents a fun "three-polarizer system" toy that can then be used with Physics Toolbox's light meter to motivate a quantitative study.
Engineering Applications
Chassis Stiffness and Crashworthiness
In the first professional use we have seen of Physics Toolbox LiDAR Motion Visualizer, researchers at the KTH School of Engineering measured deformations in the baseplate of a vehicle.
Public Bus Maintenance Costing
This Spanish-language thesis explores the roughness index of public roads in Ecuador, using a smartphone accelerometer, and the impact on public bus maintenance costs.
