Motion Mapping with LiDAR
Motion Mapping with LiDAR
The National Science Foundation (NSF), one of the worldwide leaders in science and science education funding, has awarded $573,461 to the American Modeling Teachers Association in coordination with Vieyra Software, Arizona State University, and a team of researchers and educators.
This proposal aims to create and test a STEM education tool using iOS’ scanning LiDAR (released March 2020) and Android’s non-scanning LiDAR (released in 2019) technologies for enhanced augmented reality (AR) visualization of position-based physical concepts for remote learning.
Imagine that your smartphone could project a set of invisible beams forward, and use that information to tell you where you are with respect to your surroundings. For many owners of modern phones, this is already a reality.
Our team will maximize the use of these new sensors on smartphones to help learners understand motion concepts by creating graphs of their position and velocity. (If you are a physics teacher, think about the possibility of being able to have students engage in activities like sonic ranger body movement graphs as individuals all at once during class, or even from their own homes!)
