New Publications from the Vieyra Software Team
This month, Vieyra Software shares two open access publications about our work and that of our collaborators (Mina Johnson-Glenberg, Colleen Megowan-Romanowicz, Daniel J. O'Brien). We hope you enjoy learning more about what we do, as well as the evidence for effectiveness we aim to collect in classrooms.
Harnessing the Digital Science Revolution: Smartphone Sensors as Teaching Tools
Explore Chapter 8 (open access chapter) to read about our team's developments with AR and LiDAR.
Evaluating Learning of Motion Graphs with a LiDAR-Based Smartphone Application
Preview our anticipated publication about an experimental study on student understanding of kinematics, which was carried out in an undergraduate physics classroom.
In the News
What Does Terminal Velocity Sound Like?
This iPhysicsLabs column presents the use of Physics Toolbox to measure resonant sound nodes as a magnet experiences magnetic breaking while falls through an aluminum tube.
Smartphone Homework or Classic Exercises?
This German-language article details an experiment to measure possible differences in motivation, interest, and conceptual understanding for students using smartphones or doing traditional exercises.
Eavesdropping on Conversations with an Accelerometer
Smartphone accelerometers have the capability of capturing conversation through recorded accelerometer data. See this study, which made use of Physics Toolbox.
How Effective Are Back Braces?
This article used Physics Toolbox and multiple inertial measurement units to analyze the effectiveness of back braces in various tasks.
Measuring Acceleration to Determine Axial Load
When mounted to beams, a smartphone accelerometer can support truss analysis and stability.
Outreach Events
The Physics Toolbox team has been excited to be present at a variety of venues in late 2022 and early 2023. See a few of our photos below!
Collaborator Dr. Colleen Megowan-Romanowicz represented the team at the national meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers in Portland, Oregon, in January 2023.
Physics Toolbox was again invited to lead two workshops for about 30 high school students, held on November 19, 2022, through the Washington, DC HBCU Alumni Alliance, with the goal to interest students in future STEM careers.
About 45 high school and university physics educators gathered on November 6, 2022, to participate in a Physics Toolbox workshop at the North Carolina Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers, hosted at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.
